not even trying to be funny or anything but seriously wondering why this is happening:
prince dies. (i am still in mourning)
people say all we have left is stevie wonder…
BUT there’s still patti labelle, ARETHA FRANKLIN, gladys knight, diana ross…(specifically speaking about women here. there’s also buddy guy, quincy jones (badass), herbie hancock (badass) ROY HAYNES WHO IS 90 AND IS STILL KILLIN (GOAT))
not saying that stevie doesn’t matter but when people say that he’s all we have left is kind of disturbing because it’s literally not true. shows how much we really appreciate all of those who came before us in my opinion. I’m also attached to stevie too. saw him live and cried. but still lol there’s more!
let me break down why saying that is not ok:
1) to get ANY gig, you have to put in work and time and effort on your instrument or in whatever you want to do. i’ve played with people who were nominated and/or won grammy’s and emmy’s and before i played with them i spent AT LEAST 4 hours in the shed in the weeks before the gigs and before that, trying to hone my craft everyday.
2) saying that discredits ALL the work women have done to get to where they got in that moment and to where they are going and that’s so offensive to me and all women.
3) saying that just assumes women are in the band for something to look at for more tips or whatever. trust me, if the gig sucks and the music is shitty no one is going to tip more or less based on my appearance.
4) saying that (especially if you play the same instrument or have the same job) doesn’t make you look good at all. it makes you appear insecure about your ability to complete the same task so instead of working harder to get better, you put others down and make them feel like shit to make yourself look good when instead you’re still a POS.
5) “BUT THERE ARE ALL GIRL BANDS!” yeah, that niche exists however, how many have you seen consistently playing that aren’t on tour with beyonce right now? how many do you see on a normal night out at bars? (i get that there’s HAIM and dixie chicks but i’m more focused on the jazz side because that’s where a lot of these problems are that i can relate to).
Lastly) in every industry, there IS enough for everyone. this attitude is necessary and stupid and sexist. stop hating on others and just shed and work harder to be a better person than you were yesterday.

so shoutout to all the men (& women) who don’t hate on other’s success because they’re secure with themselves and who don’t revel in the failure of other’s because they’re insecure with themselves.
lol i was called racist based of my last text post bc i passively called a girl out (who doesn’t have tumblr?) for checking her privilege before assuming that america from 40-70′s would be worse for her than me. i’m black. 1. i don’t believe black people can be racist however black people can be prejudice. i have definitely seen that first hand. 2. some white women don’t practice intersectionality and it’s annoying. you can’t talk about one -ism with out the other because they all go hand in hand. check yo definitions (and privilege while at that because the girl i was talking to at the time forgot about that). 3. i was letting out aggression for a situation you knew nothing about obviously.
